Prof Karen Holford wins WISE Award

Professor Holford receiving the WISE award.Professor Karen Holford from Cardiff School of Engineering, received the WISE Excellence Award for her personal contribution to engineering and a long term commitment to supporting girls and young women in science and engineering.Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal, the royal patron of WISE (Women into Science, Engineering and Construction) presented the award at a ceremony at the BT offices, Newgate Street, London on Wednesday 5 December 2007. The
WISE Campaign through a number of initiatives has helped to double the percentage of female engineering graduates from 7% in 1984 to 15% today. The event was supported by Openreach a BT Group Company and hosted by former Tomorrow's World presenter Kate Bellingham.Excellence finalists also included Gemma Whatling, a PhD student in Medical Engineering at Cardiff. Director of the WISE Campaign Terry Marsh commented, "The WISE Awards are an opportunity to celebrate the increasing numbers of women in science, engineering and construction. Our winners are world class contributors to the progress of young women in these fields"
